10. Postal Franchise

Banned in a handful of countries, Postal has taken the number ten spot for its relentless violence and vulgarity. With the ability to shamelessly hack celebrities and civilians alike, among other disturbing acts, caused quite a stir in the gaming world for really testing the boundaries of what is acceptable. Upon release, Postal 2 was the 2nd ever banned title in New Zealand, following Manhunt.

9. Germany bans WWII Nazi propaganda

Germany removes all swastikas and Hitler related imagery or similarities from games suggesting that it is unconstitutional. In Germany computer games are legally classified as children’s toys, therefor all Nazi imagery will be removed from any title containing it. When the newest version on Wolfenstein was released it was instantly pulled recalled for swastikas alone.

8. Duke Nuk’em, nudity and murders.

Since the days of old Nukem has been stirring the pot with vulgar language, murdering helplessly bound females, going to strip clubs, and over all destroying everything. In 1999 Duke Nukem 3D was banned in multiple countries, being considered pornographic and too violent. There are censored versions out side of the United States. 3D Realms in general has played a huge role in pushing the envelope and creating controversy.

7. Mortal Kombat: Finish him! FATALITIES!


In 1994 Mortal Kombat shocked the gaming world with blood and graphic fighting. What really takes the cake for pushing the limit are indeed fatalities. When your opponent is beaten and helpless, the player is able to preform a finishing move to completely obliterate his or her enemy. There was actually a congressional hearing held for the violence in Mortal Kombat.

6. Manhunt 2 banned everywhere


Rockstar Studios are notorious for making games that have complete disregard for what anyone thinks is considered okay to put in games. Manhunt and Manhunt 2 have been banned in more than 5 countries for violence. The absolutely gruesome kill scenes that Manhunt and Manhunt 2 has, make it one of the most hardcore killing based games ever.

5. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas “Hot coffee”


Having conducted a heap of controversy just being Rockstar, the Hot Coffee feature didn’t help them out at all. Hot Coffee was a phenomena that occurred when you would be invited into your girlfriends house for some “Hot Coffee” you would them be able to essentially engage in sexual acts. This was later removed from versions of them game after anti violence and sexual content game enthusiasts considered it highly unacceptable.

4. Resident Evil 5 is Racist?

With racial sensitivity at its peaks, Resident Evil 5 gets a whole mess of flak for the trailers of one white person mowing down crowds of African zombies in Africa. A 2005 United Nations report cited “profound discrimination of a cultural and historical nature” in Japan. It does feature Caucasian and African zombies, but predominantly African. Many have said Capcom may have been a little insensitive to how others would perceive this type of thing.

3. Modern Warfare 2 “No Russian”

Although giving you the option to skip the mission all together, and even not have to actually fire your weapon, Modern Warfare still gets a tun on controversy for its mission “No Russian” where the player takes part undercover as a Russian terrorist that slaughters hundreds of Russian civilians at a time. This mission was removed from the Russian version of MW2. Many countries and “experts” said that it was not okay, and was highly unacceptable. X-Play described the levels presence as an important catalyst to the overall plot of the game rather than a scene inserted for shock value.

2. Mass Effect “Sexual” content


One of the biggest recent controversies, Mass Effect was dubbed pornographic material for a alleged graphic sexual encounter towards to the end of the game. The catalyst was a blogger by the name of Kevin McCullough who had posted accusations that Mass Effect incited rape and sodomising. The controversy blew up on the news and gaming world. It was banned in Singapore.

1. Grand Theft Auto violence and bohemian lifestyles.

For overall legacies in controversial material, Grand Theft Auto has to be the pioneer for really getting the medias attention. It has been one of the prime examples in any anti violent video game activists arsenal. It has cought the attention of Jack Thompson, Glen Beck, and numerous New York City officials that were appalled that their city was chosen for a GTA tittle. It also got heat from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and has been labeled responsible for many acts of violence, vandalism, and teenage crime over the years.
